CLINICAL GUIDANCE ON MICROSUCTION OF THE EXTERNAL EAR CANAL

In November 2024, the British Society of Otology (BSO) published some guidance on microsuction of the ear. It makes recommendations about who should be carrying out microsuction to ensure it is undertaken safely.

It states that Microsuction should only be undertaken by audiologists and nurses who have attended an aural care course have undertaken a period of mentorship. All clinicians undertaking microsuction should be registered with a regulatory body eg. GMC, NMC, HCPC or be on an accredited register eg. AHCS, RCCP.

The professional should be able to recognise the common diseases of the external ear canal and tympanic membrane, therefore Microsuction should not be performed by people that do not have a background in health care and are not registered with a regulatory health care body.
